Budget Accountability and Transparency

Conduct an audit, monitor financial data to reduce mismanagement of OUSD funds, and to restore to a trustworthy budget. Share budget planning and findings with stakeholders regularly and clearly. Ensure the budget process includes an equity lens and adequate for all schools.
 

Sustainable Community Schools

Establish community schools whose mission is to connect home, school, and community. Set policy and provide staff to address factors outside the school that gets in the way of students’ success.

Charter Schools Accountability

All Oakland schools must be held to the same standards, whether OUSD or charter. We must fully implement the AB 1505/1507, the charter accountability bill, to halt the financial drain on public schools caused by charter schools. I support a charter moratorium.

Racial and Social Justice

OUSD must systematically use a racial equity lens in determining all aspects of the district program, including policies, curricula, personnel practices, budgeting. Our decisions should include a student-centered approach that affirms their strengths, their challenges, and their experiences.
 

Affordable Housing

OUSD must work in partnership with community nonprofits and others to develop unused public land to build affordable and workforce housing for community stakeholders.

Labor Partners

Schools function best when their labor partners have the living wage, health care, and stable retirement plans that they deserve. I realized early on that the backbone of every public school is the classified support staff. The classifieds are our unsung (s)heroes and essential workers for OUSD. They are the heart and soul of OUSD. Thank you to all the paraeducators, 504 technicians, licensed vocational nurses (LVNs), food service workers, and custodians for your dedication and service. They make our schools and campuses work.
 

Reopening of schools during this COVID-19

Under the leadership of district personnel and using established public health metrics, every part of OUSD needs clear health and safety protocols for educators and students.  OUSD to communicate such protocols promptly to all stakeholders of the school community.

 

Maintain a network of food and supply distribution centers to feed our families, working with community partners.
